Gladiator Mask

Masks were often worn during the gladiatorial events to reduce the crowds' affinity with the warriors' identities. Of course the gladiator mask was also great for protection - even though it could be quite stifling and hinder peripheral vision. Perhaps what it lacked in function, it made up in form; opponents would never know where the eyes were looking, and the completely alien nature of the mask had to be unsettling.
